Interview: Ten Questions With Kacey Montoya, Formally Of Portland's KOIN Local 6

Jenny Hansson and Kacey Montoya
She arrived with very little fanfare, and has just snuck out the back door on us without saying goodbye.  It might be a very long time until the local news industry recovers.  Just kidding, I'm totally being over dramatic.  But seriously...

Kacey Montoya has moved on from Koin Local 6, in case you hadn't heard.  And I'm pretty sure that not many people know actually, because ironically, the news of reporters comings and goings isn't really covered much by the news stations themselves.

When I typed "Kacey Montoya leaving" into Google, it didn't mention anything about her leaving her current post at KOIN.  But she has indeed moved on from KOIN Local 6, so I guess we could call this her exit interview.

In the current times, where we, as "civilians", have more access than ever before to local news reporters and other local "celebrities", if you will (thanks to Facebook and Twitter), Kacey Montoya has been a pretty good sport to us.

One of the first exchanges on Twitter that I had with Kacey was me challenging her to take the phrase "passion bucket" (Dan Patrick Show followers know this term very well) and randomly work it into one of the upcoming stories.  And she did just that.  She was doing the "news-we-never-watch-because-it's-on-so-damned-early" shift with Art Edwards, and made a reference to some Iranian politician's passion bucket being full and overflowing, and it was beautiful and hilarious!  The greatest part about it was that you could tell that Art Edwards didn't know what the hell she was talking about, or how to react for that matter.  It was just perfect and awesome.

Folks, Kacey Montoya is good people, and we wish her all the best in her next endeavor.  And hopefully, we'll even check in on her from time to time.  Now on to the questions.

Q: So first of all, when you type your name into Google, it's quite, uhhhh, interesting.  Are you leaving KOIN to take a job somewhere else?  One of the things that came up on Google is some rumor that you and Matt Brode are leaving?  Huh?

A: Yes, we both left KOIN. I was there for 5+ years. I learned a lot, met some talented people, and made some amazing friends. Keep watching KOIN for great things to come. Google...I'm so glad you asked. (Can you sense the sarcasm?) I was a model in my late teens and early 20's.

Q: I imagine in your line of work, with all the moving you do, that you never really settle down anywhere.  Is that the case or does it just depend on the person?

A: You are correct. When you choose this career you have to accept the fact that you will move to small towns to start your career. Some people find a place they like along the way and settle down, others stay put when they get a great job. It's harder for those with kids..but it is the norm in this business.

Q: How long have you been living in Portland now?  Were you forced to come here for a new job, or did you choose your way here?

A: I lived in Portland for a little more than five years. I had never been there before I took the job at KOIN!

Q: How many times a day would you say you're recognized here around town?  What is the craziest/most interesting run-in you've had with someone who has recognized you??

A: I wasn't recognized that much until I started working weekends. Then I would say a few times a week..at least that's how many times someone would ask me "Hey, are you the news lady?" out loud.

Not a lot of crazy run ins...although once the Occupy Portland protesters started calling me by name, it got a little weird.  Death row inmate, Gary Haugen, calls me "6" -- as in KOIN Local 6. (Yes, I talk to him on the phone). Most people are very nice when I meet them.

Q: Comcast SportsNet's Lindsay McCormick didn't want to answer this next question, but who is the most famous person that we would find in your phone's contact list?

A: I'll never tell.

Q: According to your Twitter & Facebook page, you seem to get along with a lot of other reporters here in town.  Are there secret station feuds that go on or times when one station will purposely sabotage another reporters' story, etc.  There has to be some of that that goes on, right??

A: There have been some not so friendly moments, but those are rare. To be honest, we are all friendly in the field. You work with the same people on the same stories, sometimes spending hours a day together in court or at a crime scene, and you get to know each other well.

I often hang out with reporters from "the competition" in my spare time.  We do talk shop, but don't EVER give away the company secrets.

Q: Do you have any favorite hangouts here in the Portland area?  What does Kacey Montoya do in her spare time here in the Rose City?

A: I'm pretty boring. I spent most of my time at work (or in a live truck), or at home with my pooch.  I spent a lot of time at Core Power Yoga or Bar Method..and working with Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals (OFOSA).

Q: Since we've been aware of your presence at KOIN, you've been all over the map when it comes to time slots and anchor desk or live "on the scene" reporter.  Understanding that the job is probably more fluid than most people think, do you have a standard time slot or job right now?  And what "job" do you enjoy doing the most??

A: I have worked several different time slots, true. Since I don't have kids I really don't mind working any shift. I like the chance to work with different people..you can learn more that way. I really LOVE the art of reporting. I love the stress of deadlines and the thrill of the chase. This job is full of highs and lows.

It can be so fun one day and completely frustrating the next day. Anchoring is nice (especially when it's raining outside) but I think I would say I like reporting better.

Q: Your 2 favorite NFL teams are the New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys, correct?  If and when they play each other, who do you root for to get the win??

A: Even though I have a crush on Mark Sanchez, I'm a Dallas girl ... graduated from Plano East Senior High School ... so my roots will win. Go Cowboys! (Let's hope they give their offensive line a makeover this offseason).

P.S. If you haven't been to the new Cowboys Stadium ... add it to your bucket list. It is truly the coolest thing I have ever seen.

Q: As you know, the 2 major sports draws in this city are the Blazers and the Timbers.  Do you partake in these events very often, and which event would you choose to attend, if there were games for each team going on at the same time?

A: I've been to a few Timbers games, but am not a big soccer fan. I love Blazers games..but was kinda shocked at how much Blazers fans hate the Lakers!  I would always pick the Blazers over Timbers because the Blazers play INSIDE!
