The Oregon Ducks Are Your 2011 "College Basketball Invitational" Champions Of The World!!!

On Friday night, the Oregon Ducks ascended to the top of college basketball's glorious third tier of greatness.  Or something like that.  They beat the Creighton Bluejays on a last-second shot from EJ Singler, making the final score 71-69.  I didn't watch this game (I only watch the real NCAA tournament), but I have a couple thoughts about this game.

I don't mean this as a knock to Oregon or Duck fans, but is winning the CBI title really that big of a deal?  I mean is it something to really be proud of, if you're a Duck fan?  Is it something that you can legitimately celebrate for?  I mean c'mon now, should you really be hoisting a player on your shoulders in celebration for winning the CBI tournament?

Sadly, the answer to all these questions is no.  This tournament means absolutely nothing.  Winning this tournament doesn't even mean you have a good team.  It only means you have a better-than-average team when compared to a bunch of other average teams.  What does that last sentence even mean??  There's a whole lot of average-ness going on there.  Winning the CBI is hardly anything to be proud of.

Listen, there is no reason they should have this CBI tournament in the first place.  All it's good for is for a few universities with sub-par basketball programs to make a little bit more money, before they shut it down for the offseason.  I don't know who started it or had the idea for it, but they should be punched in the face.  Seriously.

Let's be honest here, folks.  Oregon finished the season at 21-18 overall and 7th place in the Pac-10 conference.  If you didn't already know, the Pac-10 was a terrible conference at playing basketball.  Creighton finished with a record of 23-16 and finished 4th in the Missouri Valley conference.  And no I didn't just make up the Missouri Valley Conference.  It's an actual conference with real basketball teams in it.

There is no reason that teams that have these records and practically define mediocrity need to play in a postseason tournament.

Oh and real quick, about how the game ended.  C'mon Oregon, just paint the damn half court line on the floor already.  The victory has to feel a little more hollow when the only reason you win the game is because the player on the opposing team stepped too far over an invisible line.

But congrats to the Ducks for winning it all...I guess?  May winning the CBI championship give you all the prestige and glory that it gave Oregon State when they won it all in 2009.
