The Big East Is Really Really Bad

If you have read my blog lately at all, you've probably noticed my dislike for the Big East football conference. For about two years now, "experts" all over college football would go on and on and on about how "good" the Big East is. "Why don't they get more respect," they would ask. "Because they suck ass" would be my answer every time. Now maybe they will shutup about it already.

The games that took place this past week did nothing but help prove what I've been saying for a little while now. Folks, the Big East is really bad.

Pretty much all the teams in the Big East are or have been overrated at one time or another over the past couple of seasons. Now I have talked a lot about how no team in the Big East ever plays against a decent team, or a team from a major conference. This past week's schedule goes to prove my point even further. Here's the results:

(5) West Virginia loses to (18) South Florida 21-13
(10) Rutgers loses to Maryland 34-24
Syracuse loses to Miami (OH) 17-14
Pittsburgh gets killed by Virginia 44-14
Louisville beats NC State 29-10
Connecticut beats Akron 44-10
(23) Cincinnati beats San Diego St. 52-23

So Louisville, UConn & Cincy all win and win big. But, to be honest, none of those teams matter. None of those three teams are going to be close to competing for a national title. Nope, it was supposed to be West Virginia and Rutgers that were in the picture for the national title game, at least as far as teams from the Big East go.

To all Big East football fans: Well that was fun while it lasted, huh?

After the face plant that West Virginia and Rutgers took this weekend, thankfully, I won't have to hear much more about any Big East team competing for the title. And this makes me very happy.

Now I just have to deal with this pesky out-of-nowhere South Florida "juggernaut". They are ranked #6 in the country after impressive wins against Auburn & West Virginia. But something tells me that they aren't going to make it through the rest of the year without losing at least one game. I really doubt South Florida is going to come out of nowhere last year and compete for the national title this year. I just don't see it. I don't know who will beat them, but they are going to go away soon.

A few things about the Rutgers game, which was a highlight of my weekend (besides watching Erin Andrews do her sideline reporting):

The Scarlet Knight's got picked apart by Maryland's back up quarterback. Yes, the back-up. Actually it was the third string, true freshman back-up. I think this is highly comical. For me, at least. Maybe the Rutger's players actually thought they were going to have a chance at the national title. I mean, who could blame them right? Being ranked #10 in the country isn't exactly your everyday occurrence. It is something to get exicted about. Too bad it was all a fraud from the start. Poor Rutgers.

The New York Times had this to say about the game:
"The Scarlet Knights will sit down now and dissect this surprising game, looking for reasons why they lost to Maryland. What they will not find are excuses. Heavily favored, playing at home and facing a second-string quarterback for the entire second half, Rutgers just was not good enough. In its first test of any kind this year, No. 10 Rutgers failed miserably, losing, 34-24, to the Terrapins."
Couldn't have said it better myself. Rutgers is just not good enough. And finally they have been exposed for the fraud that they are. We here at L.O.D will look forward to a top 10 without a Big East team by year's end.
