I am a fan of lots of different kinds of music. I will listen to almost anything at least once (well except feces like Fergie and Gwen Stefani). I have a general opinion that music can serve a lot of different purposes. There is a kind of music or a song for pretty much any situation. Whatever kind of mood you happen to be in...there's most likely a song that matches how you feel.
I tend to gravitate towards music that I can connect to. This is why I started listening to Ben Harper.
The new album out from Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals is called Lifeline. It's Harper's 11th album to come out (counting three live albums). Harper's last album, a 2-disc set, called Both Sides of the Gun, was when Ben Harper re-reminded me why I listen to his music. And after going to see him in concert last May, made me a fan for life.
If you haven't seen Ben Harper perform live in concert, you have truly missed out. Out of all the concerts that I have seen and all the artists that I have seen live, his show was the best. No one that I've seen puts as much passion and excitement into his music as does Ben Harper. For this very reason, I am planning to go and see him again here in Portland in November.
With Lifeline, Harper blends his soulful vocals with all sorts of instrumental sounds. Sounds range from his typical and reggae/funk sound to his familiar alternative and blues. We even get a couple country-ish folk sounding songs thrown in there. Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals offer it all to us in the form of Lifeline. It's a very well written album that can be played loudly when you're cruising in your car or not-so-loudly when you're just chilling out at home.
And not a lot of albums can be that well rounded. This one gets 4 out of 5 stars.
Songs you must download: In The Colors, Having Wings, Fool For a Lonesome Train, Say You Will.
