Sike! Just kidding. I had you there for a second huh? The Mariners won't be competing for anything except for 4th place in the AL West, as long as they keep signing "big names" like Carlos Silva. The Mariners signed Carlos Silva today to a 4 year contract worth $48 million dollars. Hardly a game changing superstar, Silva went 13-14, with a 4.19 ERA last season. Tell me how that is any improvement over 4 of their 5 starters that they have right now.
Washburn went 10-15 with a 4.31 ERA, Horacio Ramirez went 8-7, with a 7.16 ERA, Miguel Batista went 16-11 with a 4.29 ERA, and some dude names Baek went 4-3 with a 5.15 ERA. Their only real talent at starting pitcher is Felix Hernandez. As long as the Mariners keep signing these sub-par "big name free agents" like Carlos Silva, they won't compete in the American League.
Way to go Mariners, you really improved your ball club with today's signing.
