Movie Review: Cloverfield

Well since it was way too cold to do anything outside, I thought it'd be a good idea to finally go and see Cloverfield after school today. Very good choice, I must say.

I'm not really the type of guy to get all geeked out about any movie these days. Usually what happens is that I will see a cool-ass preview, tell someone "That looks so freakin cool", totally forget when it's going to come out, and then when it actually does come out, it's always too much of a bother to battle the crowds and actually watch the movie.

This process almost always happens. Even when I'm really siked to go and see a particluar film. So since this is always my movie-watching downfall, I decided to be proactive and see it. After all, the theatre is only across the street from school.

Going into this movie, I was almost expecting a let down. Let's face it, rarely do movies live up to the hype that surrounds them. So I was keeping my expectations down from the get-go. And it worked, because this movie was a good one. And exceeded my low expectations.

I liked how they never showed very much of the monster at one time. I'm not a big monster movie geek, but not showing you the monster that is attacking you is half of the suspense. I also liked how, despite New York City getting blown to bits, there were three or four jokes made. Kind of odd, but a nice touch.

I liked how the three girls that are part of the group with the camera were all hotties. I mean, if my city was getting attacked by some huge monster, I wouldn't mind running around with Lily (Jessica Lucas), Marlena (Lizzy Caplan), and Beth (Odette Yustman). Not half bad, if you ask me. Another thing I liked was the whole "home video" point of view, just as they did in the Blair Witch Project. Conversely, that was the only complaint I had about the film. John Anderson, some critic that writes on RottenTomatoes.com, puts it like this: "A relentless, I-thought-my-eyeballs-were-bleeding exercise in visual disorientation."

Although I wouldn't put it exactly like that and go that far, it was a bit too much in some parts.

But then again, some would say that it adds to the overall experience of the movie. So there ya go. I don't want to ruin any of the actual movie ending type stuff, so there isn't a lot more to tell you. Go see it, it's a good movie. It's actually worth the price of admission. And when it comes to movies of any kind, that is the best way to judge a movie.

And to get all critic-ey on y'all, I would give the movie a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
