Sports Fans Are Really Really Smart

I think the fans of University of Oregon basketball are the smartest fans of all.

And by "smartest", I mean the absolute dumbest. Here's why. Last Thursday, Kevin Love came to town with the UCLA Bruins and beat Oregon in Eugene. Final score was 80-75. Star freshman Kevin Love dominated the game with 26 points and 18 boards. It was quite the performance by Love.

But that wasn't what everyone was talking about today. They were talking about the home crowd at Mac Court. They call themselves the Pit Crew. They should now be called the Pitiful Crew.

You see, Kevin Love was a star high school player here in Oregon. He won the Naismith National Player of the Year. This guy was good. His father, a dude named Stan Love played his college ball for the Oregon Ducks, and because of that, everyone here in Oregon thought that Kevin Love somehow owed it to the people of Oregon to attend University of Oregon.

Let me ask you this: When you're the best high school basketball player in the country, are you going to want to go play ball for a program like Oregon, or a program like UCLA?? Love ended up signing with the Bruins, and not the Ducks.

Fast forward to last Thursday. The Pit Crew was going to let him have it. They were going to try to throw him off his game and really let Kevin Love know how much they felt betrayed by him going to UCLA, rather than Oregon. Fair enough, right? I mean, that's part of the point of being a fan and going to a game. You root against the other team as hard as you can.

But the Pit Crew took it a little bit too far for the UCLA game.

Here's what happened. Some of the chants were pretty out of line and vulgar. There isn't a lot to say about what they did. Just that it was really pathetic and loser-ish. The Pit Crew is trying to become "cool" and "hip" and trying to be the "Cameron Crazies of the West." But they seem to be becoming just plain ol' punks.

Athletic director Pat Kilkenney of Oregon had to apologize to Love, Love's father, the UCLA athletic director and UCLA coach Ben Howland.

Duck fans have become straight up punk-like. I've experience this punk behavior first hand. But I think it's funny just how stupid they are too.

In the comments of the story from the Oregon Daily Emerald, I noticed this comment from a guy called "David." Another commenter had previously called UCLA "arguably the premier basketball program in the nation." This is what David said in response to that comment:

"Arguably the premier basketball program in the nation? I think the folks at Duke and North Carolina would disagree with you. That fat blob (meaning Kevin Love) would ride the bench at either of those programs."

"And he didn't got to UNC because his fat butt would be riding the bench behind Hansbrough."

Um. Come again? Are you serious?

Sorry dude, but Kevin Love would NOT be on the bench behind Hansbrough. David, if you ever read this post, here are some stats for ya. Here's how they're both doing this season so far:

Kevin Love: 17.2 pts, 11.2 reb, 59% FG, 37% 3-pt, 0.8 blk, 1.9 ast

Tyler Hansbrough: 22.0 pts, 10.1 reb, 55% FG, 0.0% 3-pt, 0.2 blk, .9 ast

And Hansbrough is a Junior. Love is merely a freshman. So there you go, David. Love wouldn't be riding the bench. He'd be forcing Hansbrough to ride the bench, if anything.

Wow, this is a long post people. So to sum it all up...Oregon fans are big a-hole losers and had their poor little feelings hurt when Love ditched Oregon and actually wanted to play basketball for a winning basketball school.

Get a life, Pit Crew (yes I mean all of you).
