Things That I Don't Get: "Baby Gym"

Now there are a lot of things that I don't get about being a parent and taking care of kids. Lots and lots...and lots of things. On my own, I can handle about a good 4 hour block of babysitting. I max out at about 1-2 diaper changes, and then I'm done. I'm really only good for making funny faces at babies, and pretty much making them cry when they see me.
So me and my sister rounded up my nephew and my cousin's baby and headed out yesterday morning. Rumor had it, that we were taking the kids to the local "baby gym." It was like 10 am (early for me) and I hadn't showered yet (I'm super obsessive about showering before leaving the house), so I was already quite thrown off for the day. I was out of my element. So I couldn't really object to where we were going.

I guess they actually have places set up for babies to get together and play, and there happens to even be a company that is responsible for this type of thing. Maybe I am just nuts, but I just don't get this baby-gym thing at all.

Maybe it's a widely-accepted fact that play groups are highly beneficial to babies everywhere and we should all be taking our kids to them, but to me, it seems as though they're good for two things, and two things only:

--A place where babies learn how to effectively fight over toys with other kids that are approximately the same age. This is always good for kids to learn at the earliest age possible.
--A place where babies can swap all their baby mucus and slobber and pick up the disease of the week. Or they can even pick up a whole multitude of diseases all at the same time if they want to!

And that's about all I can think of. Am I missing anything here?
